Oil with acrylic on canvas, gold leaf, copper leaf, collaged areas

In my original drawing, she was completely nude, except for a lovely headband. For me, often times the clothing helps tell a story. I 'decorated' her with a pale green slip-like dress, and costume jewelry…. Almost like playing dress-up except on canvas.
Her left arm originally was lying relaxed on her hip, but I wanted more, so I ‘lifted’ the arm, and placed an imaginary bird head ‘puppet’ on her hand. I like to imagine the she is using the bird to help her tell stories….. She is in her own made-up world surrounded by soft breeze blowing through palm leaves, with jeweled pebbles scattered on the ground underneath her lounging pillow.

This work is different than many of my others because I left out stitching and burlap, etc., and allowed my collaged paper instinct to kick in with the pebble groundwork and bird head, mostly made from collaged paper, giving it properties beyond what paint could do in my opinion.

8pm Dinner

8pm Dinner

Acrylic and oil on canvas, sealed yarn & burlap, collage, gold leaf

Every now and then I have to satisfy my need to paint veils. “8PM Dinner” was made along with another painting of similar in size, shape, and subject matter entitled “July Meeting”. The birds were shaped with small selected bits of paper, and then touched up a bit with paint and gold leaf. Silver spiraled lines serve as perches, as they enhance their decorative, yet surreal environment under the wispy veil.

Story

Story

Oil on canvas, sealed yarn & burlap, collage

The girl here with her long, wavy, princess-like hair is a bit of an ‘echo’, styled after another LiShinault called “Bedtime Story”. In both works, the young ladies each wear bunny slippers, and feline headpieces…. a powerful tiger head. This one has a large amount of energy that is 'carried' all around by a breeze blowing through her hair. Her ‘audience’, two duck hand puppets and a ‘goatbird’ on her shoulder. The latter had previously been painted into a tile painting called “Margo’s Girl”. The patchwork dress is ‘echoed’ from the painting called “Lemon”. Each patch is a painted canvas sewn together.

The Chase

The Chase

Acrylic on canvas, sealed yarn & burlap, vinyl

Over the years I have used ideas and images from my past works to inspire new work. As I began a set of new paintings for an upcoming gallery show, I chose an early LiShinault work called “StarBite” featuring a minimal color palette as well as fairly simple design to ‘re-do’. Most everything about the new painting was planned to be the same, except for reversing the image. The newer painting is this one here... “(The) Chase.

Both paintings have the silhouette of a pack of running dogs chasing red balls with star designs. The figure of a goat-type creature in the forefront juts in from the side with one of the red star balls in its mouth. After all was painted and stitched together I turned each painting sideways and allowed a few drips of paint to ‘race’ each other horizontally across.

There are obvious differences in the two paintings, but the intention was not meant to replicate the past, but rather to ‘enjoy’ a bit of re-creating the past.

When I make a painting like this (which is a bit of a reach from the detailed figurative paintings), it is a way to ‘stretch and breathe’ and learn from the ways of the abstract and minimal artists that I so much love and admire, and in the end, I am ready to embark on more detailed figurative work.

BedTime Story

BedTime Story

Oil on canvas, sealed yarn & burlap, silver leaf

“BedTime Story” is all about memories of things I love about my childhood. The girl is wearing cat ears much like the pajama cat ears that belonged to my sister. I love fuzzy bunny slippers, so they had to be here. I simply enjoyed painting things I love in this piece, so of course there is a ‘lovely duck’, and of course I had to give it a halo….

Sweet Dream

Sweet Dream

Oil on canvas, sealed yarn & burlap, copper leaf

“Sweet Dream” was made at the same time as another of similar look and size called “Jewelry Box”. A ballet dancer stands on toes, front and center on a tiny stage which resembles a giant daisy. Her hands, costumed with duck heads, come to a classic ballet pose…though one snuggles a bit more under her chin. A large bronze spotlight shines on her.

Beauty and grace on stage.
“Sweet Dream”… she may be sweet, but she is also strong and powerful.

Yesterday

Yesterday

Oil on canvas, yarn, sealed burlap, goldleaf, vinyl, diary confetti

I made this painting along with another of similar size entitled "Today" They each sold to different parties, so they are separate now. At the time I had worked a temporary job in visual merchandising for Atlanta's "Saks 5th Ave"....which included working with wigs in the manner of the hair on this figure. I decided to paint a woman with this kind of hairstyle in clothing sort of from a bygone era. The 'window' in the lower dress area contains among other things scraps from my diary, nothing legible. Her raised hand holds an old key supposedly to the lock of the diary being held by her purse conveniently shaped like a hand.
