Music at Time Home

Music at Time Home

Oil on canvas, gold leaf, sealed yarn & burlap, wood

“Music at Time Home“ is a painting about being inspired by music. For me, listening to music while painting has a trance-like effect, which is represented by the woman in this work. The clock on her head and the numbers floating in the background represent the timeless feeling of being in a trance—the moment where time seems to stand still and past and present merge. The clothing and boots are reminiscent of a bygone era while the adoring dog grounds the woman in the living present. The tiny singer, held delicately in the woman’s lap, serenades the woman who sits staring forward, emotionally fixated on the music, gazing into the distance—the future perhaps? This painting began as a bust of a woman with a clock on her head. I chose to cut out certain areas and add others in—the dog, the clothing and the singer. I purposely emphasized edited portions with bold black yarn stitching. Attached at the top is a signboard bearing the title, “Music at Time Home”.

Babble

Babble

Oil with Acrylic on canvas, sealed yarn & burlap, vinyl
yr. 2018
I named this work “Babble” because the jumble of spheres and circles seem to flow like a babbling brook behind the swimming duck. In order to not waste paint, I make a habit of smearing some of the leftover paint onto nearby canvases. Over time a nice build-up colors and layers become their own entity. It is yet another abstract outlet I enjoy introducing into my figurative works. Thus, “Babble” was not a planned out work, but instead one whose separate painted pieces came together as I rearranged them, seeing what moved me most so that they could be sewn together chaotically with a cross-stitched ‘babbled’ language.

BirdDogDuck

BirdDogDuck

reverse glass painted collage

This is directly influenced by two figures from early works, “The Lovely Duck” and “Life And Death”. The duck body with stitch marks, turned to the right and topped with the head of the shiny black beak-wearing dog (featured in the third panel of “Life and Death”). Two bird dogs lived in a pen on the property behind my back yard. They would always howl when the church chimes rang. As an afterthought, I guess the duck body may be ironic since bird dogs were used for hunting ducks.
“BirdDogDuck” stands proudly on his mountain of collaged lentils against a silver mist.

Treasure Bird is the first reverse glass bird image I’ve made. It didn’t remain with me long, as it was sold quickly. It has a main title of Birdpril I to help me keep track of other similar works, but I call it Treasure Bird because of a bit of word collage under the beak reading ‘most treasured. I used collage images of woven basket to make its’ chest. Its singing is expressed by collaged musical notes.

28”H x 25”W (available)

acrylic, oil on canvas, silver leaf

Painting veils is something I love doing. Sometimes the veil is the main subject, as in this piece. It started as part of a longer stretch of canvas, but I cut it apart to showcase portions of the veil more directly. This and others are a break from my past veil work which features a black background with a white veil fluttering across. I decided to go the opposite route and brighten up with a pale sky blue background with a small shower of silver raindrops that glisten in the light. As I child, I used to lay in bed admiring the veil-like curtains nearby, which in a way seemed to whisper to me. Hence, the title…”Whisper”.
