Kim & Phil's House
8” X 11.5”, mosaic tesserae, reverse glass, and painted grout on wood panel.
I wanted to make a primitive-folk style house portrait with my mosaic skills, so I chose a beloved house that belongs to my brother and sister-in-law, and made a mosaic representation of it as a gift. An extra plus was a colorful quilt-like square plaque that hangs on the front left of the house, a painting made for the house exterior by another family member. I started with a tiny replica of the quilt-like square, then I placed tesserae to form the house around it. I took liberties in adding non-realistic elements, then asked them for any sort of special broken tesserae, in this case a broken family heirloom platter, and I used bits of it for tree leaves and a lower border.
